With basic lighting a room can be illuminated properly, without any disturbing shadows or dark corners, at the touch of a button. There is, however, often a lack of sufficient natural light in the bathroom. This is why choosing basic lighting that reflects the colour temperature of natural light as closely as possible is a good idea for this room.
2. Install more than one spotlight

A single lamp in the middle of your bathroom may be enough for basic lighting, but a little variation is better: ceiling spotlights, wall-mounted light fixtures next to the mirror and indirect LED strips in a niche. And while you’re at it: install dimmable lighting: perfect for relaxing in a luxurious bath!
3. How to light a mirror

A crystal-clear reflection in the mirror is indispensable for the meticulous application of eyeliner or a perfectly clean-shaven chin. For this, you need the right accent lighting. Opt for diffuse lighting on both sides of the mirror, mounted at eye level for every user. If you have no other option, install diffuse lighting on the ceiling immediately above the mirror, ensuring that the light reaches the appropriate depth. This way, fewer shadows will be cast on your face.
4. Choose the right design

The shape of your light fixture underscores the architecture of your bathroom. If your bathroom is stark, accentuate the architectural lines and use profiles or square spotlights. Or, if you like a cosier atmosphere, install round spotlights and wall-mounted light fixtures, for example. With regard to colours: it’s best to keep it simple. White is still the most popular colour, while black provides a strong accent.
Avoid these common mistakes
- Never opt for only one central point of lighting. This is simply not sufficient for a bathroom.
- Don’t forget lighting in the shower. If your shower has an opaque door or a shower curtain, you don’t want to shower in the dark!
- Do not install spotlights directly over the bathtub. This will hurt your eyes.
- Be careful when installing lights in the ceiling above a mirror. They easily cast too much shadow on your face, making it difficult to shave or apply make-up. Not only that, they will accentuate the bags under your eyes!
5. Time to get out the bath foam

One of today’s most typical trends is cocooning: preferably in the bathtub and with soft lighting. Soft lighting is also ideal for people who simply can’t face bright bathroom lights in the morning. The solution is to install dimmable lighting. Create the perfect atmosphere in which to completely unwind in the tub, at the touch of a single button. Extra tip: dimmable lighting is also available for LEDs.
6. In the smallest room

There is no need for direct lighting in the smallest room in your house: the toilet. Opt for diffuse lighting, preferably from a wall-mounted light fixture. Ceiling spotlights are usually superfluous here. However, integrating orientation lighting for the toilet into your corridor lighting plan will provide extra comfort and convenience at night.
Check the IP value
The lighting in a bathroom should always be water-resistant. Various rules apply, depending on the distance of the light fixture from the shower, bathtub or washbasin. These can be consulted in the Belgian General Regulations for the Installation of Electrical Appliances (AREI). Your electrician will know immediately where to install the lighting by looking at the IP number on the light fixture.
